Big BO Clash I - Mohenjo Daro / Rustom

By: Amit KumaR Agarwal

Clash of the films, are inevitable with more & more studios & producers giving in to the poop model (making the most out of the opening weekend) and 1st week. Case in point, the recent blockbuster of Indian cinema Sultan - it did 229 crores in 9 days extended week - but thereafter settled to a lifetime total of 300cr to 301cr nett India over a course of 5 to 6 weeks.

Over the course of next 6 months 3 big clashes are pitched.

August 12, 2016 - Mohenjo Daro / Rustom
October 28, 2016 - Ae Dil Hai Mushkil / Shivaay

January 26, 2017 - Kaabil / Raees

This article is about the first clash - Mohenjo Daro & Rustom; since both the films have an A-list superstar top-lining the cast; let's anazylze the lifetime collections (India nett) of their respective last releases.

Hrithik Roshan's Bang Bang did 180cr India nett
Akshay Kumar's Housefull 3 did 110cr India nett

Hrithik Roshan's film biz on an average is 150cr India nett
Akshay Kumar's film biz on an average is 100cr India nett

Next comes the director's - last films of both the respective directors Ashutosh Gowariker & Tinu Suresh Desai were flops.

Next comes the perception in trade. Both the films will not work in mass belts, though Mohenjo Daro, depending on the content has better chances than Rustom. Chunk of the business will come from city multiplexes, so the films have to appeal big to family audiences and youth.

Mohenjo Daro is more appealing to family audiences because the action scenes in promos, particularly the horse-training and the crocodile scene has been liked by U-12 kids.

Rustom is more appealing to youths, as it seems a taut thriller and Akshay has created a goodwill amaongst the youth with films like Baby & Airlift.

Promos of Mohenjo Daro got a mixed response; whereas promos of Rustom have generally been liked.

At the moment both the films are poised at an even keel. The billion-dollar Q - which film will be affected more.

Though most of the experts opine that Mohenjo Daro will be affected more; the critic feels Rustom will be affected more - reason being, just like Jodhaa Akbar, Mohenjo Daro was always going to be a slow starter and it would have only caught, if the word of mouth was positive, as in the case of Jodhaa Akbar; whereas Akshay Kumar's critically acclaimed films do a business of 90cr to 120cr India nett; Rustom will find it tough to touch breach the 120cr -130cr nett bracket; anything above 130cr looks absolutely impossible.

Here's wishing both the films, the very best and hope both emerge winners for the sake of the Hindi Film Industry.
